You hit the gas, but realize the gas pedal is broken right off.
"Brad," says Joyce. "What's the matter? You seem scared."
"Oh, no you don't!" you say. "You're not goint to do it to me twice!"
"Twice?" says Joyce. "We did it twice this morning."
Just then another van passes you with you driving it.
"Him!" you shout. "Go ruin his life! I'm outta here!"
You yank out the time-controller console from your van and get out.
Joyce, BOOG, and Lucia look on stupified as you pass the other you who's just stepping out of his van.
You get in his van and slam the door.
"Hey," says the other you. "That's my van!"
You lock the doors and set the controller for ten minutes before you left.
Brad bangs on the door as you hit the gas.
With you chasing you on foot, you swing around to Billings street to have enough room to reach the magic speed.
You slam your foot on the gas. Being several years "newer", the van picks-up noticeably faster. You reach 43 mph, and in a flash of light are back in time.
Immediately you slam on the breaks to avoid rear-ending the newly-appeared traffic stopped at the lights.
A couple of minutes go by -- the damn traffic light is taking forever.
You give up on it, and throw it into reverse.
You speed backwards around the block to Poppy's house, but you're moments too late!
Through the back window of the van, you watch as Merv fall to the ground, slain. Then you see your van lurch out of the driveway. You hit the brakes to crashing into it.
You miss the van, but plough into the Greek phalanx close on its tail.
Meanwhile. down the street, your van jumps into the past. The confused Greek army sees the crumpled phalanx, and flees in fear.
You jump out of the van, and rush to Merv's side.
"Merv!" you shout at his lifeless body. "MEEEERRRRRRRVVV!!!"
Just then, the back doors of your van open up and out steps Merv.
"What's up, Marty?" he says sleepily. "Who's that?"
Merv yawns and points to himself on the ground.
"Oh," you say, blocking his body's face. "Uh, nobody important... So... you were in the back of my van all this time?"
"Yeah," says Merv. "You said I could crash there after the party at Buddy's place last night. It's cool, right?"
"Oh," you say. "Uh, yeah. It's cool."
You give Merv a much appreciated lift back to his place to get some more sleep.
He never does seem to realize that he's missed the past eight years.
That night, under a moonlit sky, you bury the dead Merv out back in the mulch pile.
It's been a long day.
You head into
the basement, crawl into your favorite spot, curl up, and go to sleep for
the night.
